Last week’s Socialism Saturday featured a deep dive into videos from the Denver Communists, who consistently speak in remarkably clear terms about their revolutionary goals. Through several presentations, we explored how the radical revolutionary left views topics from trans rights to border abolition to the American Revolution.
Let’s walk through exactly what they’re saying—step by step—with time stamps you can explore on the video if you would like the full context.
🏳️⚧️ [32:10:00] Trans liberation requires abolishing capitalism
The Denver Communists make it crystal clear that the fight for trans rights is inseparable from the fight against capitalism:
"Trans liberation is not possible under capitalism... The diverse and beautiful varieties of gender expression and sexuality that make people whole will only flower to their fullest under socialism."
They explicitly connect transphobia to capitalism's need for rigid gender boundaries that maintain the cultural reproduction of workers. The trans struggle is framed as a threat to capitalist norms of gender.
🌍 [37:26:00] All progressive causes are linked by anti-capitalism
The left understands how various social issues are interconnected in ways that conservatives often miss:
"The current wave of reaction is not directed against trans and queer people alone. It includes the overturning of Roe Wade, the racist attack on 'critical race theory,' the demonization of immigrants, and the tough on crime backlash..."
When they talk about race, gender, climate, immigration, or any other issue, they're all manifestations of the same anti-capitalist struggle. Each is an attack on capitalism from a different angle.
🗳️ [48:48:00] Democrats are useless to the revolutionary cause
The Denver Communists repeatedly and harshly criticize Democrats for being ineffective allies at best, and active collaborators with capitalism at worst:
"Even transgender Democrats cannot be counted on to fight for trans rights... Rights granted by fickle so-called allies can be snatched right back."
They expressed particular disgust that Rep. Sarah McBride (D) would comply with bathroom rules set by Republicans, viewing this as betrayal of revolutionary principles.
🚫 [1:21:20:00] Border abolition is non-negotiable for socialism
Borders are viewed as direct mechanisms of capitalist oppression:
"We must staunchly support the complete abolition of borders as well as the regimes which enforce them... The path to socialism requires border abolition."
They see borders as tools to divide workers, depress wages, and maintain unequal conditions that benefit capitalism. Their goal isn't just open borders—it's no borders at all, along with overthrowing the systems that enforce them.
🧠 [1:46:20:00] Self-emancipation: workers must liberate themselves
The Denver Communists explain a central Marxist principle that the proletariat must free themselves:
"The only group the proletariat could rely on for their emancipation was themselves... One of the core aspects of capitalism is that capitalists are constantly in competition with each other over who can most effectively extract surplus value from workers."
This is why they distrust democratic socialists, reformers, and anyone trying to work within the system. Real liberation cannot come through savior politicians or incremental change.
🔄 [2:05:40:00] Revolution must be permanent and international
The Denver Communists believe in Trotsky's concept of permanent revolution:
"The revolution may begin in Russia but to complete it, it will have no alternative but to link the fate of its political rule, and hence the fate of the whole Russian revolution, with the fate of the socialist revolution in Europe."
This explains why revolutionary socialists don't just want to transform one country—they need global revolution, as they believe capitalism will always undermine any isolated socialist experiment.
🔁 [2:10:00:00] Gender, racism, and class struggle are inseparable
Social and class struggles are portrayed as one unified battle:
"A socialist revolution requires the acknowledgment that there is no separation from social struggles and class struggles. Gender equality, anti-racism, reproductive rights are all parts of class struggle due to the material effects they have on workers."
This is why they focus so heavily on identity issues—they don't see them as distractions from economic concerns, but as integral components of the same fight.
⚔️ [3:07:29:00] The American Revolution was a proletarian uprising
In perhaps the most fascinating segment, the Denver Communists reinterpret the American Revolution as a working-class revolt against capitalism that was co-opted by elites:
"White people, that term was reserved for people who didn't work in the sun. It was reserved for rich people... when he said he wanted to kill as many white people as possible, he meant rich people."
They portray events like the Boston Tea Party as anti-capitalist attacks on private property ($3.5 million worth, in today's terms), arguing that working-class solidarity was the true revolutionary force that was later betrayed by the founding fathers.
🏛️ [3:32:01:00] The founding fathers were capitalist traitors
The Denver Communists believe the American elites weakened the revolution rather than leading it:
"When the elites finally do join, they send up George Washington... and what is his first act? His first act is to dismiss any negroes, Native Americans, or mulatto from the colonial militia... The elites actually weakened the revolution rather than leading it. They debilitate the revolution at every step."
They see the founders not as revolutionary heroes but as opportunistic elites who co-opted a genuine proletarian uprising against British capitalism.
📚 [0:14:20:00] How to fight back? Listen and learn
I emphasize that to effectively counter these ideas, we must first understand them deeply:
"The whole point of socialism Saturday is that we take some time out of our schedule every single week to sit our butts down and listen to what the enemy is saying and trying to understand their worldview and their perspective and their strategies and their tactics and all the things they're doing to screw up our world because if you don't understand your enemy you can never defeat them."
This is why Socialism Saturday exists. Not to mock or simplify, but to truly comprehend what drives revolutionary socialist thinking so we can effectively respond.
🧩 [0:38:20:00] The left is consistent and strategic
One of the most important takeaways is how remarkably consistent these revolutionaries are in their messaging:
"The left understands that these things are interrelated from their perspective... they know deliberately what they are doing. The right does not understand this... They think that all these issues are separate. They are not separate. They literally all come from the same place. The origin point for all of these ideas is the left desire to abolish capitalism."
The revolutionary left shares a coherent worldview that spans issues, organizations, and tactics. Understanding this coherence is crucial to addressing it.
