Trump Ends DEI and Affirmative Action with a Bold Executive Order
On January 21, 2025, President Donald Trump dropped a policy bombshell by signing an executive order that eliminates affirmative action and axes diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs from federal agencies. This move sends a loud and clear message: the era of identity politics-driven policies is over, and meritocracy is making a comeback.
Here’s the breakdown of what this executive order does and why it matters:
What Did Trump’s Order Do?
Canceled Affirmative Action: Federal agencies can no longer make decisions based on race, gender, or other identity factors. Admissions, hiring, and promotions must now be strictly merit-based. Public colleges and universities that depend on federal funding must also follow suit—they are required to eliminate affirmative action policies in admissions, hiring, and other institutional practices. This means no more using race, gender, or other identity markers as criteria for any decisions.
Shut Down DEIA Programs: Offices and programs focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion are officially on the chopping block. Federal employees in these departments have been placed on paid leave as the government dismantles these initiatives. Public colleges and universities must also comply by eliminating DEIA offices and initiatives that were funded or supported by federal resources. This means programs and offices promoting identity-based diversity efforts will be defunded and shut down.
Reversed Prior Policies: Key executive orders that mandated diversity-related practices, such as protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, were rolled back. It’s all about leveling the playing field without giving anyone a leg up.
Encouraged Private Sector Change: While this order doesn’t force private companies to act, it sets a strong precedent. Businesses that were on the fence about their DEI programs might now rethink them in light of the federal shift.
What Does This Mean for Real Life?
Federal agencies are already working to pull the plug on DEIA offices, and the same is expected for public colleges. Institutions that relied on affirmative action for admissions now face a major overhaul. They’ll need to transition to a purely merit-based system, which means dropping race and gender as factors in decision-making. Programs aimed at increasing diversity may be defunded or redesigned.
For public colleges and universities, this means big changes:
Admissions Shake-Up: Schools can no longer consider race or gender to build a diverse student body. Everything must focus on grades, test scores, and other measurable achievements.
No More DEIA Training: Faculty and staff won’t have to sit through hours of diversity and inclusion workshops. Hiring practices will shift to ensure compliance with the new merit-based rules.
Funding on the Line: Colleges that don’t comply risk losing federal funding. This could push even the most reluctant institutions to embrace the changes.
A Direct Challenge to the Woke Left
This executive order is a declaration of war against the "woke" agenda. It rejects the idea of identity-based preferences and puts the spotlight back on individual achievement.
What’s undeniable is that this is a game-changer. Trump’s order reaffirms the principle that everyone deserves an equal shot—not a leg up based on their identity. It’s a hard reset for government policy, one that’s sure to ripple through public colleges, workplaces, and beyond.
In summary, Trump’s executive order dismantles affirmative action and DEIA programs, bringing merit-based opportunity to the forefront. The woke establishment will undoubtedly resist—both overtly and covertly—so it’s critical to monitor how this battle unfolds. Public colleges and universities are now in the spotlight; those that resist compliance could face serious consequences. Let’s hope Trump follows through to ensure these institutions uphold the new standards.

I hope this EO ends DEI practices in the govt. I'm not so sure though. The swamp treats DEI like a religion. They cling to those practices as if their lives depend on it
