We first heard about the Mary Nardini Gang during a Queer Marxism Marathon on one of my more memorable Socialism Saturdays from Violent in a lecture about Transgender Marxism on one of my favorite channels, Red May.

Violet told us the following:

“Queer is not merely an identity but, as the Mary Nardini Gang point out, the qualitative position of opposition to presentations of stability and a total rejection of the regime of the normal.”

This is a language that Violet took from the zine Towards the Queerest Insurrection by Queer Anarchist group The Mary Nardini Gang. You can download a full PDF of the document here.

This document perfectly summarizes the perspective of the modern Queer Marxist movement. Written in 2014 prior to the legalization of gay marriage nationwide, it is certainly wasn’t the first document to advance queer theory, it does perfectly encapsulate the ideology I have seen repeatedly in every Queer Marxist training that I have watched that has taken place over the last 10 years.

Here are some of the highlights

Queer is not the same thing as being gay or trans. It is much more.

“Queer is the cohesion of everything that is in conflict with the heterosexual, capitalist world.”

Queer is the opposite of the nuclear family

Queer is at odds with the nuclear family, and they do not like it when gay people assimilate to what they call “heterosexual capitalist” values. They call this “homonormativity” today, although that word did not exist when this document was written:

“The normal, the straight, American family has always constructed itself in opposition to the queer.”

The goal of queer is to “annihilate capitalism”

“The Liberation of Queer people is intrinsically tied to the annihilation of capitalism”

They used different words to reference capitalism, including racism, patriarchy and Empire. I’ll explain how the root of each of those words is capitalism in this clip:
