What Elon Musk Doesn't Understand About the Left
Spoiler: He Doesn’t Actually Get What He’s Tweeting About

Elon Musk posted this on X today, but let’s be honest—he probably doesn’t know what this post is really about.
Hamas and Hezbollah are not leftist organizations.
But Judith Butler is a socialist, and regardless of what Hamas and Hezbollah think about their conflict with Israel, Judith believes the whole thing is rooted in capitalism.
Socialists define capitalism as private property ownership. In the context of the Middle East, they view Israel as the capitalist bourgeoisie—the property owners—and the Palestinians as the anti-capitalist oppressed proletariat.
This framing is why the left calls Israel "settler colonists," a term they use to suggest Israel stole the land from the Palestinians. The Palestinians, in this view, are trying to “decolonize” by taking it back from their so-called oppressors.
When Judith Butler refers to Hamas and Hezbollah as part of the “global left,” she’s implying that they are engaged in the broader struggle against capitalism.
Here’s another relevant perspective: listen to this clip from ME O’Brien, a revolutionary communist, discussing how the far-left sees the conflict in the Middle East.
O’Brien says:
“…Perhaps thinking about a Palestine that is free of capitalism and its violence, and many Palestinian activists think and talk about it this way.”
This is the same rationale behind why "Queers For Palestine" exists on the left. Queer theory is anti-capitalist, and they view Palestinians as part of the uprising against capitalist colonizers. You can read more about that here.
To the communists, “intifada” doesn’t just refer to an uprising in the Middle East—it represents the idea of a worldwide socialist revolution. You can hear this explained in my interview with two leaders of the Revolutionary Communists of America.\
For the left, it always circles back to capitalism. Every single time.
