Zines: The Far-Left's Propaganda Tool
Zines have long been a favorite weapon of the far-left—a medium through which they articulate their ideas, spread propaganda, and recruit new members to their cause. They’re especially popular among queer anarcho-communists and have played a significant role in shaping the narratives of today’s queer activists.
By examining their propaganda, we gain a window into their ideology and tactics.
Today, I’m taking you inside Queers In Space, a queer zine believed to have been created by a student of high school or college age in 2001. Let’s explore how these seemingly niche publications wield outsized influence in the radical left’s playbook.
It’s called Queers In Space because queers need to find spaces to exist and agitate in. That means a critical component of being queer is agitation.
Warning: Elements of this zine contain adult content and are not safe for work. Continue at your own risk.
Early in the zine, they emphasize the importance of defining their own words, with the specific intention of subverting the traditional meanings:
Queer is defined as “an instigator…a gender-fucker, or anyone else who wants to fuck shit up…to subvert…anything you want it to be…subversive.”
They differentiate between sex and gender, saying sex is your genitals and your gender is the “socially constructed idea and expectation of how you should act.”
Often in leftist presentations, you’ll hear them discuss the idea of holding space, taking up space, etc… In this zine, you’ll see they define space as a place to be active and cause a commotion, particularly pushing back on normativity:
The zine mentioned deviant “non-straight” sexuality earlier, but that doesn’t mean straight people can’t be queer. They just adhere to one of the other definitions of queer, which has nothing to do with sexuality.
The zine explicitly advises AGAINST appearing as though you are a part of the American Dream. That’s because the American Dream doesn’t exist without capitalism and queer is an anti-capitalist ideology. That includes queering your looks, demonstrated by the cartoon woman shaving her head.
