I am flabbergasted and even sickened. The thing is, I'm pro-choice up to 8 or so weeks. I had an abortion in my life at around 6 weeks so I come from a place of some understanding. It was an emotional, heartbreaking experience for me. These people are so afraid to even say the words. They have come up with their own fairy tale language and the cheapest possible way to frame this sometimes traumatizing event. If anything, this turns me completely off to hearing from these people. What they are advertising is not the real world. It made my stomach turn. 😢
I'm following from Tucson, AZ, where I've lived for 20 years. I went to Mount Holyoke College, just a short bus ride from Hampshire, and I would love to know more about the Pioneer Valley! When I went to freshman orientation, we were told we were no longer girls; we were women. It was a powerful rite of passage, and to this day I make sure to speak of women with respect. Now Mount Holyoke is a women's college that admits queer people, and over fifty percent of the student body identifies as queer.
This is weird. I mean, on the one hand, I'm glad they indirectly acknowledge that it isn't simply a cut-and-dry medical procedure. On the other hand, treating it like a ritualistic sacrifice, which is how this came across to me, is just plain creepy. Like you, I'm firmly pro-choice with certain limitations and exceptions, but abortion isn't something to be celebrated or taken lightly. I wish more of them could see that.
I read a book of Buddhist feminist writers, although the title I can't remember. There was an essay about a Japanese practice of spiritual abortion, in which the mother communicates with the fetus to ask it to terminate, kind of a concensual process. I had a miscarriage, so this makes sense, and seems so much gentler. Let everyone have access to birth control and encourage fewer abortions. Of course women need to have control over their bodies and healthcare decisions.
I am pro-choice, within reason, I don't believe in late term abortion unless its for medical reasons. But this exhibit is insane and sickening. A doula... what in the actual hell!?
I know what you mean about these people being "lovely" I live in a deep blue state, most of my friends are liberals, some of them what I would call "rabid" liberals, they're lovely people, but any mention of Trump makes their eyes pop out with anger.

Their idea of spiritual practices and sacred beliefs inform us of their scary pagan thoughts and actions.
